General Requirements

The University seeks to enroll students with superior academic credentials and strong personal character who will positively contribute to the diverse and rich cultural environment of campus life. Each applicant's academic and personal record should reflect promise of growth, seriousness of purpose, and a sense of responsibility. The University reserves the right to admit only those applicants whose records indicate potential for success in a university environment. The University also reserves the right to examine further any applicant by the use of psychological, achievement, and/or aptitude tests, and personal interview or to request additional information in order to assure that the applicant meets all university standards. Philosophy Statement

Admission Procedures and Standards

The University, through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, reserves the right to revise admissions criteria to any program, school, or college and/or to request additional information of applicants at any time during the academic year if deemed necessary.

How to Apply for Admission
Applications for undergraduate admission may be submitted electronically at our Web site at www.admissions.uga.edu or printed from our Web site. Completion of all forms and submission of all requirements by the appropriate deadlines is mandatory before the applicant's request for admission can be considered. Applicants to the University must enclose a non-refundable application fee to cover the expense of processing the application. Once the application for admission and other required records of the applicant are complete and in proper order, an evaluation will be made in terms of academic record, the probability of completing the requirements for the desired degree, and the competitiveness of the applicant pool. The University reserves the right to terminate offers of admission when enrollment limits are reached or when applicants' credentials are deemed incomplete or unsatisfactory.

Specific information about housing, orientation, pre-registration, and transferred courses is sent to the student following the offer of admission.

Based on the University System of Georgia requirements, admission to the University of Georgia is contingent upon the student's legal residency in the United States. Prior to enrollment, all admitted students must have their citizenship verified.

First-Year Admission

Applicants for first-year admission to summer or fall semester must apply by the appropriate deadline (see the Admissions Web site, www.admissions.uga.edu). The University of Georgia admits first-year applicants whose high school curriculum, grades earned, and college admissions test scores indicate they can be successful at the university level. The admissions standards are primarily a combination of these academic factors and the competition for a limited number of class openings by a growing number of highly qualified applicants. For first-year admissions, the University calculates an academic index based upon academic credentials and the actual performance of recently enrolled first-year students. Historically, the most heavily weighted factor in the University's admissions process has been the grades earned in core college preparatory subjects. The University may also request and use qualitative information to determine a student's potential for success at and contribution to the University.

Transfer Admission

To be considered for University admission, all transfer applicants must be in good academic standing at their last college attended and must have official transcripts of all college work sent to the University. Please refer to the Admissions Web site, www.admissions.uga.edu, for deadline information. Transfer applications are generally processed during the term immediately preceding the intended term of transfer to UGA. The transfer grade point average will be calculated by UGA Admissions on grades earned in all transferable college work attempted. A student who is on academic warning, probation, or dismissal from the last institution attended will not be admitted to the University.

The transfer grade point averages and transferable hours required for consideration for admission to UGA are established each year by the Faculty Admissions Committee. These requirements are subject to change. Please see the Admissions Web site for up-to-date requirements (www.admissions.uga.edu). Admission of eligible applicants is dependent upon the availability of space. University colleges, schools, and individual majors may require higher averages for acceptance. Admission to the University does not imply that the student is eligible for admission to a specific major. Precise admission requirements to a major can be obtained from the appropriate dean's office.

To calculate an overall transfer grade point average, UGA Admissions must include all grades earned, including Ds and Fs, in all academic courses an applicant has attempted. Normally, grades earned in a course which is repeated after first earning a C grade or better in that course will be excluded from the transfer admissions average. The calculated transfer average does not include grades earned in physical education, orientation courses, or career-oriented courses from a terminal associate degree program or certification program.

If a student planning to transfer to UGA from another institution within the University System of Georgia has completed Area I-V of the core curriculum with courses taken either at that institution or another institution from which UGA accepts transfer credit, UGA will accept the area as satisfied. Students should direct their questions about core curriculum areas I-V and VI to the dean's office of the school or college in which they will be advised.

Transient students, those currently enrolled at another institution and planning to return to that institution, may enroll for a summer semester in some UGA undergraduate classes by applying for admission and presenting a letter of good academic standing from their home college. Note: Courses taken at the University while a student is transient will not be used later in determining admissibility as a regular transfer student to UGA.

Post-baccalaureate students are college graduates taking additional undergraduate courses, but not for a UGA undergraduate degree. To be admitted, post-baccalaureate students must submit official transcripts from each college attended, one showing proof of graduation, and have obtained the required overall transfer academic grade point average.

Second degree students are college graduates planning to obtain an additional undergraduate degree from UGA. To be admitted, official transcripts must be submitted from all colleges attended and students must meet the minimum grade point average required.

Transfer of College Credit
The University of Georgia accepts credits from other accredited colleges and universities if the courses taken are "college parallel" and not remedial or career (terminal) courses and the courses are “for credit” classes. Students may check the on-line web site to confirm transfer equivalency of courses at http://www.admissions.uga.edu/apps/transferequiv/index.html. In order to earn a four-year degree from the University, a student must complete a minimum of 45 of the last 60 semester hours on the University of Georgia campus. A minimum of fifteen (15) hours of this work must be in senior division courses of the student's major. These requirements vary according to the major.

Students transferring to the University who have completed some or all of the core curriculum courses at another unit of the University System will receive full transfer credit. However, courses from a two-year college that would be earned in the upper division at the University are generally non-transferable.

Applicants for Readmission

Most applicants for readmission are undergraduates who had enrolled previously at the University of Georgia and who now wish to reenroll in undergraduate courses.

For former UGA graduate and transient students, the readmission admission process is handled separately. Those who only attended UGA as graduate students and who want to continue enrollment in graduate courses should contact Graduate Admissions directly. Former graduate students who intend to take only undergraduate UGA courses must apply for Undergraduate Admission as a new undergraduate student. Students previously enrolled at UGA only as transients must apply for and meet UGA transfer admission requirements to be become regular (i.e., UGA degree-eligible) transfer students. Also, former UGA students seeking readmission following dismissal from UGA must contact the dean’s office of the college or school at UGA in which they were last enrolled prior to submitting a readmission application.

Starting in 2014, readmission of students who were neither UGA graduate or transient students is now handled by the Office of the Registrar, not Undergraduate Admissions. If the student was last regularly enrolled less than one year prior to the term of intended re-enrollment, she or he may be eligible to register for classes without having to submit a Former UGA Undergraduate Application. In this case, they should contact the academic advising office of the college or school at UGA in which they were last enrolled.

All other former students now apply for readmission through the student information system, Athena. To complete the Former UGA Undergraduate Application, students login to Athena with their MyID and password.
