Scientific understanding of how natural systems work, including life and the physical environment, the organism as the fundamental unit of ecological study, population structure and dynamics, species interactions, organization and classification of communities, ecosystems as defined by nutrient cycling and energy flow, landscape ecology, biodiversity, and global ecology.
