Course Title:Introduction to Medical Interpreting, Ethics, and Intercultural Communication
Course
Description:
Preparation for and practice of Spanish-English medical interpreting, including roles of healthcare interpreters, ethics, healthcare interpreting skills, terminology, and vocabulary for interpreting and translation. Includes structured practice in community settings and events (e.g., health fairs, clinics, hospitals) to enhance skills and serve as cross-cultural liaisons.

Nontraditional Format:Course includes a service-learning project during the semester that employs skills or knowledge learned in the course or teaches new skills or knowledge related to course objectives. Student engagement in the service-learning component will be up to 66% of overall instruction time. During the semester, students work at clinics and other healthcare venues practicing healthcare interpreting and translation of healthcare-related forms. Students will engage in about 30-45 hours of service learning in hospitals, clinics, etc., depending on the need of the institution. If the institution can only accommodate less than 45 hours, more interpreting practice will be done in class.
