Description:
A written thesis capstone of a research sequence in genetics under the supervision of a faculty member.

Duplicate Credit:Not open to students with credit in GENE 4990
Nontraditional Format:A capstone course that culminates at least two semesters of research supervised by a faculty member. Students will write a thesis that describes their systematic and in-depth inquiry into a fundamental, unknown, scientific problem. The thesis is written in close collaboration with the faculty member and must be approved by that faculty member and an independent reader according to departmental guidelines. Students will have had to apply understanding of the discipline to identify or shape the research question and applied skills and techniques learned to the research project. Students will have gathered data, synthesized relevant literature, analyzed, and interpreted data. Students will have presented preliminary results through the research process both in writing for feedback and from participation in lab meetings and meetings with the faculty. The student will demonstrate in writing the contribution to the discovery and interpretation of knowledge significant to their field of study.
Prerequisite:Permission of department and GENE 4970H and permission of Honors
