Course Objectives: | The goal of this course is to introduce the student to the
nature of the aboriginal cultures of North America at the time
of first contact with Europeans and later with Euro-Americans.
One important theme will be the relationship that Native
Americans had with their environment and their subsistence
economy, technology, social organization, values and beliefs
combined to enable aboriginal Americans to successfully occupy
every inch of the continent from the Arctic Ocean to sub-
tropical Florida. After taking this course, the student will be
able to describe and discuss:
1. The origins of American Indians, Eskimos, and Aleuts in North
America.
2. The development of Native American cultures in North America
through time.
3. The life-ways of Native Americans at the the time of European
contact.
4. The impact of first European contact on Native Americans.
5. Some of the key issues facing the First Nations today. |
