Course Title: | Plant Breeding Practicum |
Course Description: | Supervised practical application of previously studied theory
in the area of plant breeding. Students will directly interact
with scientists directing applied breeding programs on an array
of crops. |

with plant breeders on the Athens, Griffin, and Tifton campuses. |

Course Objectives: | Upon completion of this course, the student will:
1. Have a broadened understanding of the scope of research
method techniques and breeding strategies used in applied
breeding programs.
2. Have an understanding of how applied plant breeding programs
are planned, implemented, and managed.
3. Have an understanding of plant breeding techniques unique
to specific crops. |
Topical Outline: | Topics and hands-on experience with UGA plant breeding programs
include: crop importance, reproduction and the breeding
process, breeding strategies, field-plot techniques, greenhouse
and off-season nursery techniques, role and use of molecular
markers, use of transgenic traits, data collection and
analysis, role of inter-disciplinary teams, and the cultivar
release process. |
