Course Objectives: | Students will be expected to achieve the following:
1) a general understanding of the historical development of prose fiction;
2) an ability to distinguish and discuss the formal elements of prose fiction;
3) a sophisticated vocabulary for discussing prose fiction;
4) an enhanced ability to write fluent analyses of prose fiction texts;
5) an enhanced ability to enjoy prose fiction. |
Topical Outline: | This course is taught by instructors with a wide variety of specialties within the
field of British and American literature, thus texts to be studied and organizing
themes will vary from semester to semester. In general, students can expect that
attention will be paid to some or all of the following topics:
1) the history of prose fiction;
2) formal features of prose fiction;
3) terms used to discuss and analyze prose fiction;
4) the development of selected literary themes over time. |
