Course Objectives: | To introduce students to the range and variety of fiction in
English. To enhance their skills as readers of literary texts
and to sharpen their skills as writers of essays about
literature. To consider some of the wide-ranging ethical and
moral issues addressed by writers of fiction. |
Topical Outline: | Specific works taught will vary by instructor. These may
include a historical survey of the development of prose
fiction, including works in translation or an in-depth focus on
the works of one author, such as Edgar Allan Poe or Doris
Lessing. Students will learn to analyze the function of various
elements of fiction, such as plot, setting, characterization,
and theme. |
