| Course Objectives: | - Students will be able to explain and discuss the basic ecology
of longleaf pine ecosystems, including site-type and regional
variations, the role of fire in structuring the ecosystem, and
the conservation status of longleaf pine, including wildlife
species of concern.
- Students will learn to consider multiple forest, wildlife and
conservation objectives and to design management approaches that
integrate these objectives.
- Students will have an understanding of longleaf pine
silviculture, including even and uneven-aged management systems
and how these meet specific management objectives.
- Students will learn how prescribed fire is utilized in ongoing
management of longleaf pine.
- Students will learn restoration techniques for longleaf pine
overstory and understory from a range of starting conditions. | Topical Outline: | Course topics will include, but will not be limited to, the
