Course Objectives: | After completion of the course, students should well grounded in examples of
scientific fraud, understand the impact of protecting intellectual property vs
publication, know the issues surrounding the use of human subjects and animals
in research. Students will also prepare a short talk on a subject of their
choice that reflects some aspect of responsible science. Students are also
expected to understand the ethical and social issues involving the use of
transgenic animals, gene ownership, human stem cells, and genome projects.
As a consequence, students should be able to conduct their research in a
responsible way a high professional and ethical standard. |

Patents, publishing & industrial relations
Use of human subjects
Genome projects and gene ownership
Transgenic organisms, human stem cells, and genetically modified organisms
Use of animals in research
Discussion of the NIH document on being a scientist and student presentations
The course syllabus is a general plan for the course; deviations announced to
the class by the instructor may be necessary. |
Honor Code Reference: | Students are encouraged to work collaboratively and as they prepare their talks. No
exams are given because this is a discussion course. However, students are expected
to participate actively in the ongoing discussions, to present their points of view,
and to be tolerant of other student’s opinions and feelings.
All academic work must meet the standards contained in "A Culture of Honesty." Each
student is responsible to inform themselves about those standards before performing
any academic work. Students are encouraged to talk to other faculty and students to
further their understanding of the issues pertaining to the conduct of responsible
research. Any infringement of the honor code that comes to the instructors'
attention will be remanded to the appropriate UGA entity for investigation and
disciplinary action. |
