Course Title: | Music Therapy Practicum I |
Course Description: | Beginning level of practical experience in conducting music
therapy sessions with selected clients. Includes observation,
assisting, planning, implementation, and documentation of weekly
music therapy sessions throughout the semester. |

Nontraditional Format: | Field work under the supervision of a licensed music therapist
(2-4 hours per week in the field plus preparation time). |

Course Objectives: | The student will demonstrate ability to:
* Identify the client's primary treatment needs;
* formulate therapeutic goals and objectives for individuals and
groups based on assessment findings;
* Design treatment sessions;
* Communicate behavior expectations to clients;
* Assist the client in developing effective communication
skills;
* Provide experiences to promote client decision-making. |
Topical Outline: | 1. Potentials, limitations, and problems of exceptional
individuals;
2. Causes and symptoms of major exceptionalities and basic
terminology used in diagnosis and classification;
3. Typical and atypical human systems and development;
4. Dynamics and processes of the therapist-client relationship |
