Course Title: | Introduction to the Nonprofit Sector: Theory and Practice |
Course Description: | Introduction to the theory, trends, and policies that shape the
nonprofit sector in the United States and abroad. A brief
history of the nonprofit sector in the United States followed by
an overview of nonprofit theory and classification systems for
nonprofit organizations. |

Course Objectives: | 1. Introduce students to basic concepts of nonprofit theory,
which explain the distinct role of the nonprofit sector in
comparison with the state or market.
2. Familiarize students with the current scope and important
trends affecting the major sub-sectors within the nonprofit
sector.
3. Provide an overview of the historical connection between
nonprofit development and public policy in the United States.
4. Give students a familiarity with important policy debates
surrounding nonprofit practice and nonprofit organizations.
5. Outline critical challenges facing the organization and
management of nonprofits. |
