Course Objectives: | Readings in this course will consist of representative Brazilian
and Portuguese plays as well as selected critical and theoretical
texts dealing with drama as a literary genre and with specific
aspects of staging and performance. The course will also examine
the socio-political context of Luso-Brazilian theatrical
production, focusing on the issues directly affecting playwriting
and performance (e.g. censorship).
Undergraduate students will write a minimum of three (4-5 pp)
critical papers in addition to two exams. Oral presentations in
class will be required of both undergraduate and graduate
students. Graduate students will also write a final research
paper (15-20 pp).
