Course Objectives: | By the conclusion of this course, students are expected to be
able to:
1. Apply critical thinking skills and knowledge within
professional contexts, especially with respect to theories
and knowledge about alternative paradigms for viewing
individuals, families, groups, and communities;
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the effects of policy on
individuals, families, groups, and organizations as social
units during periods of social and environmental stability
and flux;
3. Analyze the effects of social policy related to family
well-being and community empowerment;
4. Explicate the international implications of social policies,
social work meta-theories, and domestic (U.S.) patterns of
oppression;
5. Understand the forms and mechanisms of oppression and
discrimination that impact most on communities and, in turn,
on families, and be prepared to advance social and economic
justice for those individuals and/or groups who are most
vulnerable in those systems;
6. Assess the dynamics of political power and leadership
through the design and presentation of symbols and agendas
in public relations and negotiating processes;
7. Analyze and evaluate the effects and impact of legislation
and policies as implemented at federal, state, county, and
local levels. |
