Course Objectives: | By the end of the course, students will:
--know the archaeological, artefactual, and literary evidence
for Roman art from the Regal period through the fourth century
A.D.
--know the key museum collections for Roman art
--know how to use a variety of primary and secondary sources to
reconstruct a comprehensive picture of Roman art
--understand Roman art within the contexts of the development
of the city of Rome, the growth of the Roman empire, the
evolution of Roman culture and society, and the arts produced
by other peoples in Italy
--engage in critical analysis and synthesis of the various
categories of evidence for Roman art
--produce writing appropriate to the subject of Roman art and
to the disciplines of classics and classical art |
Topical Outline: | 1.Before Roman art: Etruscan art (Caere and Tarquinia) and
Greek art (Magna Graecia, especially Paestum)
2. Regal Period: early sculpture, painting, civic, and sacred
architecture
3. Republic: portraiture, painting, and domestic architecture
4. Early Empire: monumental architecture, portraiture, wall
painting, imperial residences, and entertainment buildings
5. Late empire: religious architecture and Christian art |
