Course Objectives: | 1) To introduce students to major directors and works of East Asian cinema;
2) To study East Asian film as a distinct form of literature in its historical
context;
3) To examine themes, techniques, and theories of East Asian cinema in an
international context;
4) To develop students' skills in reading filmic and literary texts from a
comparative perspective;
5) To help students understand East Asian societies and cultures through film. |
Topical Outline: | CMLT 4220/6220 will be devoted to a survey of major works of East Asian cinema.
Films will be selected from China, Japan, and Korea and will be analyzed in a
comparative context as a distinct literary form. The specific works studied will
vary with the instructor. |
