Course ID: | ENTO 8010-8010L. 5 hours. 3 hours lecture and 6 hours lab per week. |
Course Title: | Insect Taxonomy |
Course Description: | Insect identification, classification, and phylogeny; collection
and preparation techniques for insect specimens; introduction to
theoretical and methodological aspects of systematics. |
Oasis Title: | INSECT TAXONOMY |
Prerequisite: | ENTO 4000/6000-4000L/6000L or permission of department |
Semester Course Offered: | Offered fall semester every year. |
Grading System: | A-F (Traditional) |
|
Course Objectives: | Students will become knowledgeable about the current classification of insects
to the subordinal or superfamilial level for most insect taxa. Students will
have the ability to sight-identify common families of insects from the
southeastern U.S. at the familial level. They will have knowledge of the
taxonomic literature and research collections permitting them to make accurate
identifications on their own. Students will know the basics of taxonomic
theory and practice as is needed to understand the classification of insects
for entomologically oriented research studies. |
