Course Title: | Concepts in Integrated Pest Management |
Course Description: | Primary literature and group discussions will be used to
familiarize students with current ideas and controversies in
integrated pest management of arthropod pests. Writing and
presentation skills will be strengthened through paper
preparation and topic presentation. |

Course Objectives: | Students will become familiar with core principles and current
issues in integrated pest management and will enhance critical
thinking skills through presentations and class participation
and discussion. |
Topical Outline: | Topics of Discussion: Each student will select one or two
topics, organize a presentation and lead the discussion of the
topic from selected readings. Students will participate in
discussion of other topics. Topics will be adjusted to respond
to current and emerging issues, but most or all of the following
will be addressed:
• Transgenic crops – Insects
• Transgenic crops - Weeds
• Invasive species
• Biological control: nontarget effects and duration of
impact
• Issues in regulatory and quarantine entomology
• Precision agriculture and remote-sensing
• Sampling: quantity and quality
• Analysis of boll weevil and other eradication programs
• Male-sterile and other areawide practices
• Thresholds and pest complexes
• How does IPM fit in with emerging preventive
technologies?
• Emerging cultural practices such as push-pull
• IPM and society
• Emerging pesticide technologies and biopesticides
• Organics and local food production |
