Course Title: | Foundations of Environmental Education |
Course Description: | Foundational knowledge and applied service-learning experiences
in the field of environmental education, including goals,
theory, practice and history of environmental education and the
competencies necessary to be a well-prepared environmental
educator. |

Nontraditional Format: | Course includes a service-learning project during the semester
that either employs skills or knowledge learned in the course or
teaches new skills or knowledge related to course objectives.
Students will be involved in the planning and implementation of
the project(s) and may spend time outside of the classroom.
Students will be engaged in the service-learning component for
approximately 25-50% of overall instructional time. |

Course Objectives: | Students will be able to:
1. Define and recognize distinguishing characteristics of
environmental literacy.
2. Identify and discuss the goals, theory, practice, and history
of the field of environmental education.
3. Accept and apply the responsibilities associated with
practicing environmental education.
4. Explain and apply the fundamentals of high-quality education
and the unique features of environmental education to design and
implement effective instruction.
5. Develop basic skills to engage learners using open inquiry
and investigation techniques, and to guide students through the
process of personal reflection on their views about the
environment.
6. Develop basic skills and knowledge using appropriate
assessment and evaluation techniques.
7. Apply and reflect on course learning objectives in the
context of a community-based service-learning project. |
