Course Objectives: | Present students with integrative studies of various aspects of
French or Francophone culture, civilization, literature,
literary theory, or linguistics. |
Topical Outline: | Topics will vary with each instructor. The following are two
examples of possible topics:
1) Linguistic Approaches to French Literature and Culture:
Study of the thematics of communication in various "texts"
(film, literature, advertising), reading in the light of
modern linguistics (semiotics, speech act theory, pragmatics).
2) French and Francophone Literature Since 1800 in its
Historical and Cultural context: Basing our readings on Denis
Hollier's "A New History of French Literature," we will attempt
to link important literary works to their specific moment in
cultural history, exploring phenomena such as gender and race,
class, art, the media, etc. |
