Course Description: | Introduces central texts, schools, and debates of German cultural studies and their relationship to literature and film. Issues addressed may include nationalism, gender studies, psychoanalysis, postmodernism, pop culture, and critiques of industrial/capitalist society. Required of all German majors; open to all students. Taught in English. |

Course Objectives: | Acquire working knowledge of the central issues debated in
modern (19th and 20th century) German culture. Discuss the
status of "culture" and its relation to literature, history,
film, art. Develop concepts and vocabulary for the scholarly
investigation of culturally significant texts and images. |
