Course Title: | Directed Research |
Course Description: | An individualized research project under the guidance of a
faculty mentor within a research laboratory on campus that
conducts infectious disease research. How to conduct and document
scientific experiments. The risks and appropriate precautions to
work safely within that particular laboratory environment. |

Course Objectives: | 1. Understand the risks and precautions to safely conduct
experiments in the laboratory.
2. Learn experimental approaches and techniques to address
scientific questions.
3. Learn how to document research experiments in a laboratory
notebook.
4. Learn appropriate behavior necessary to amicably cohabitate
a research laboratory. |
Topical Outline: | Following approval of the project by the course director, the student will work with the faculty mentor toward the completion of the project. The student is expected to work 3 hours per week per credit hour toward the research project. At the completion of the semester, the faculty mentor will assign a course grade based on work ethic, research notebook, and laboratory stewardship. |
