Course ID: | MARS 1010L. 1 hour. 2 hours lab per week. |
Course Title: | Introduction to Marine Science Lab |
Course Description: | Physical, chemical, and geological characteristics of the marine
environment. The effects of human activity on marine
environments and resources. Emphasis on student-designed
experiments to explore major physical and chemical course
concepts in a collaborative learning environment. |
Oasis Title: | Intro to Marine Science Lab |
Pre or Corequisite: | MARS 1010 or MARS 1011 or MARS 1011E or MARS 1015H or MARS 1030 or MARS 1030H |
Semester Course Offered: | Offered fall semester every year. |
Grading System: | A-F (Traditional) |
|
Course Objectives: | Upon completion of this laboratory course, students will have a
better understanding of how the chemical, physical, and
geological parameters function in marine systems. Some of the
laboratory activities are observational while other laboratory
exercises are experimental. |
Topical Outline: | Student learning will be assessed weekly using summative
quizzes that cover mastery of the previous week’s material as
well as preparation for the current week. Students are asked
to complete a weekly reflective essay to assess their
understanding of the major learning objectives for the lab
period and to place it context with real world events. There
are several nontraditional group project assessments that
summarize the application of course material to marine events
(tides, coastal storms, surface currents, and wind patterns). |
Honor Code Reference: | All academic work must meet the standards contained in A
Culture of Honesty, the University of Georgia’s official
policy on academic honesty. Each student is responsible for
informing themselves about the standards contained in A
Culture of Honesty before completing an academic work.
Evidence of academic dishonesty will be turned over to the
Vice President for Instruction for resolution. Students will
be asked to sign an academic honesty statement on all exams,
quizzes, and group assignments completed as part of MARS
1010L. Information about UGA’s academic honesty policy is
available on-line at www.uga.edu/ovpi. Click on Academic
Honesty for more information about policies and procedures at
