Course ID: | MARS 1020L. 1 hour. 2 hours lab per week. |
Course Title: | Introduction to Marine Biology Lab |
Course Description: | Brief survey of marine life followed by experimental labs that
investigate the physiology, ecology, and behavior of marine
organisms. Students work collaboratively with instructor
supervision to design and carry out experiments of interest to
the students. In this course, students learn through hands-on
experiences with organisms of interest. |
Oasis Title: | Intro to Marine Science Lab |
Pre or Corequisite: | MARS 1020 or MARS 1021E or MARS 1025H |
Semester Course Offered: | Offered spring and summer semester every year. |
Grading System: | A-F (Traditional) |
|
Course Objectives: | Students will keep a laboratory notebook summarizing what they
observe during the marine organismal survey section of the
course. They will be able to use their laboratory notebook to
complete an identification test of common southeastern U.S.
marine organisms. Each two-week experimental module will require
each group of students to collaborate on a lab report that
summarizes their experimental methods and results. At the end of
term, each group of students will collaborate to create a poster
that captures their best work and present it to their peers in
the last lab meeting. Students are also required to complete a
weekly reflection summarizing their lab experience for the week
and focusing on their learning outcome(s) for that lab period. |
