Course ID: | CBIO(PBIO) 4600/6600. 3 hours. | Course Title: | Biology of Protists | Course Description: | Organismal biology of protists (algae, protozoa, and zoosporic
fungi) with an emphasis on cellular and developmental biology,
evolution, phylogenetic relationships, life histories,
physiology, and ecology. | Oasis Title: | BIOL OF PROTISTS | Prerequisite: | BIOL 1104 or (BIOL 1108 and BIOL 1108L) or BIOL 2108L or (PBIO(BIOL) 1220 and PBIO(BIOL) 1220L) | Semester Course Offered: | Offered spring semester every year. | Grading System: | A-F (Traditional) |
| Course Objectives: | By the end of this course, students will have developed a
knowledge base to support lifelong interest and learning in
protistan biology and should be able to:
1) identify protists belonging to the major protistan
evolutionary lineages;
2) describe the principal structural, biochemical and
developmental characteristics, life history, and phylogenetic
relationships of the major groups of protists;
3) research and write a term paper on an instructor-approved
topic of interest in protistan biology.
Students enrolled in CBIO(PBIO) 6600 will give a 30-
minute presentation on the term paper. | Topical Outline: | Introduction and major protist groups

Course Title: | Biology of Protists Laboratory |
Course Description: | Examination and identification of protists in samples from
nature, methods of isolating and culturing protists, and
experimental investigations of protists. |
Oasis Title: | BIOL OF PROTIST LAB |
Prerequisite: | BIOL 1104L or BIOL 1108L or BIOL 2108L or PBIO(BIOL) 1220L |
Corequisite: | CBIO(PBIO) 4600/6600 |
Semester Course Offered: | Offered spring semester every year. |
Grading System: | A-F (Traditional) |
|
Course Objectives: | By the end of this course, students will be able to 1) properly
use a light microscope, 2) collect a sample of protists from
nature, 2) identify the majority of protists in such a sample,
3) draw and label protists seen in the light microscope, 4)
isolate and culture protists, 5) use the scientific process to
carry out instructor-designed studies on protists.
Students will have learned how to isolate and culture a
heterotrophic protist and will have used the scientific process
to carry out a student-designed experimental study of a protist. |
Topical Outline: | Use of the light microscope
Collecting protists from nature
Identification of living and preserved protists
Drawing and labeling protists
Isolating and culturing protists
Experimental manipulation of protists
