graduate of a secondary institution in a Spanish-speaking

Course Objectives: | Objectives include:
1. Providing for the specialized needs of heritage speakers
2. Maximizing writing and reading exercises to raise
intermediate high level
Expected learning outcomes include:
1. Student will be able to write, read, and speak Spanish at
least at the level of SPAN 3010
2. Student will be able to read essays from Hispanic
periodicals, short works of fiction, and poetry and
intelligently deal with them in spoken or written Spanish
3. Student will commit fewer written and spoken errors common to
heritage speakers
4. Student will be prepared to succeed in Spanish courses at the
3000, 4000 levels and beyond |
Topical Outline: | I. SPAN 3011 – Reading comprehension, composition and grammar
clarification for heritage speakers
A. Reading Comprehension
1. Assigned readings will provide a common basis for in-class
discussion
2. Specific questions about the reading’s diction and grammar
will be answered
3. Ambiguities caused idiomatic or figurative speech will be
clarified
4. Oral presentations of current events found in on-line
Hispanic periodicals will aim to improve the student’s
comprehension proficiency and oral expression in an academic
environment
B. Composition
1. Journals will be kept and graded weekly
2. 3 compositions of 4-5 pages will be written
3. There will be a thorough discussion of most common errors in
the compositions
4. Students will teach at least two of their errors to the class
5. Students will practice conventional composition formats and
learn the basics of approaching a literary text
6. A 5-7 page final research paper on an assigned literary work
will be written
C. Grammar clarification
1. From a textbook of Spanish for heritage speakers (i.e.,
Español Escrito, or Entre mundos), students will learn how to
avoid common errors of heritage speakers such as incorrect
regularizations of certain verb tenses, hypercorrection of
non-standard nouns, etc.
2. Written exercises from the textbook will provide the
opportunity for application and repetition of grammar lessons
3. At every opportunity, grammatical ambiguities in spoken or
written Spanish found in texts, audio and/or visual recordings,
or classroom conversations be discussed and clarified |
