  • A passing grade on an examination on the history of the United States and Georgia is required to satisfy the United States and Georgia History Requirement for all persons receiving a baccalaureate degree from the University, unless exempted by one of the following courses: HIST 2111, HIST 2111E, HIST 2111H, HIST 2112, HIST 2112E, HIST 2112H, HIST 3080H. Entrance Requirements
Students must audition to gain admission to the Hugh Hodgson School of Music. This is a high-demand major. After meeting the entrance requirements, students will be selected based on the following high-demand selection criteria.

High-Demand Major–Selection Criteria
  • Entrance audition for first year students that selects students with very high music performance skills in a set instrumentation.

  • Passing subsequent music performance skills exam in the first and second years that demonstrate increasing musical maturity and skill in at least one performance medium. 

  • At the beginning of the first year of study, Intended Music Education students must acquire a Pre-Service Certificate. 

  •  At the beginning of the second year of study, Intended Music Education students must apply to the program. Students must also have achieved a minimum overall GPA of 2.8.

  • Completion of one of the following courses: MUSI 2040, MUSI 2050, MUSI 2060, MUSI(AFST)(AFAM) 2080, MUSI 2090, MUSI 2300, MUSI 2300H.

  • By the end of the second year of study, Intended Music Education students must complete two of the following: MUSI 2400MUSI 2540MUSI 2550MUSI 3240MUSI 3400, MUSI 3441MUSI 3450SMUSI 4090/6090MUSI 4350/6350MUSI 4360/6360MUSI 4370/6370MUSI 4380/6380

  • The second-year review will be a 30-minute presentation of skills on the primary instrument, keyboard, and an interview. Students will complete the following tasks: perform an unaccompanied solo selection on principal instrument demonstrating all aspects of excellent musicianship (approximately 5 minutes); play a folk tune (provided at review) by ear on principal instrument or on the keyboard (approximately 4 minutes); and accompany at the keyboard while singing the given folk tune.  

  • Review of student scores and achievements in the following three areas: professionalism, pedagogical understanding, and demonstration of competent teaching behaviors. Admission to the Upper Division sequence (MUSI 4500S/6500S and MUSI 4520/6520 or MUSI 4530/6530).

    A baccalaureate degree program must require at least 21 semester hours of upper division courses in the major field and at least 39 semester hours of upper division work overall.
    Students in the Franklin College must earn a grade of "C" (2.0) or better in major required courses.
