- A passing grade on an examination on the history of the United States and Georgia is required to satisfy the United States and Georgia History Requirement for all persons receiving a baccalaureate degree from the University, unless exempted by one of the following courses: HIST 2111, HIST 2111E, HIST 2111H, HIST 2112, HIST 2112E, HIST 2112H, HIST 3080H. Entrance Requirements
Effective Fall 2024, there are no entrance requirements for this major.
Entrance Requirements prior to Fall 2024:
Completion of two ARHI 2000-level courses (or their approved equivalents) and two ARHI 3000-level courses. The combined GPA for these four courses must be a 3.0.

Major Requirements
|
A baccalaureate degree program must require at least 21 semester hours of upper division courses in the major field and at least 39 semester hours of upper division work overall. Students in the Franklin College must earn a grade of "C" (2.0) or better in major required courses.

Required Courses (30 hours) 30 hours of ARHI courses (Minimum grade of "C" (2.0) or better required.)* Choose fifteen hours of ARHI courses at the 3000 level Choose fifteen hours of ARHI courses at the 4000 level, one of which must be ARHI 4800** or ARHI 4960R *Non-equivalent transfer courses (ARHI 3T01 to ARHI 5T99) may not satisfy this requirement. **All majors are required to take ARHI 4800, ideally in their last or second to last term.
Museum Internship credit (ARHI 4995) is a major elective and may not be used toward the 15 hours of 4000-level courses. Students who intend to take courses in Art History while enrolled in a Studies Abroad Program should check with the Art History area chair to determine if Art History credit is likely to be granted before completing registration for that program.
There are four broad areas currently taught in the Art History area. Students are required to complete at least one 3000-level course in each of these areas. Furthermore, students are also required to take 4000-level courses in at least 3 of these different areas. Please note that students should plan a program of study that avoids more than three ARHI courses or more than two 4000-level ARHI courses in any semester.
1. Ancient, Late Antique, Medieval, and Asian
2. Renaissance and Baroque
3. 18th and 19th Century
4. 20th - Century Contemporary
ARHI 3090 and ARHI 4800 are variable courses that will satisfy the requirement of "additional 3000-level course" and "additional 4000-level course" respectively. When the topic of these courses aligns with an area not already fulfilled by a student, area-specific distribution credit may be requested by contacting the Art History chair.
Experiential Learning: A student pursuing this degree may fulfill their experiential learning requirement through any of the following opportunities:- Study off-campus through a UGA field study course or UGA Study Abroad program
- Three hours of Internship Credit through ARHI 4995 or ARST 4930 (with minimum grade of "C" (2.0) or better)
