Description: The Physics and Astronomy major combines the fundamental study of physics with observational astronomy and astrophysics. Emphasis is placed on applying theory to current astronomical and astrophysical problems and on individual research.

Career Opportunities: Career opportunities include employment in private and government laboratories, university teaching, in planetaria, in the armed forces, or in secondary school teaching.
Expectations
of Transfer Students:
Students intending to pursue a major in physics and astronomy should begin calculus as soon as possible, and complete it through MATH 2270 and MATH 2700. They should complete the PHYS 1311-1311L, 1312-1312L and the ASTR 1110, ASTR 1120 sequences and take ASTR 2030L before the first semester of their third year. A physics and astronomy major must have a grade of "C" (2.0) or better in all the required 1000- and 2000-level physics, astronomy, and mathematics before enrolling in more advanced ASTR courses.
Scholarships: The Hendren Memorial Scholarship is available to students in this major by nomination of the faculty. Some undergraduate research opportunities also carry a stipend.
Available Graduate Programs: Astrophysics/astronomy, physics, science education, engineering, data science, applied math, and many others, including medical school and law school.
