Description: The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree with a major in Plant Biology is a liberal arts degree with a concentration in the plant sciences. It prepares students for ecologically- or biotechnology-oriented careers focusing on the plants that are foundational to the earth's biota and essential for supplying the world with food, fuel, and fiber.

The Plant Biology major is designed to give students a broad understanding of plant biology or plant and fungal biology relevant to current environmental and societal challenges, and getting a rewarding job or entrance to post-graduate programs of study. The Plant Biology major includes several core classes similar to those in other majors in the Biology Division (e.g., Genetics, Evolutionary Biology) but provides the flexibility to build an interdisciplinary program of study from a broad range of courses with an emphasis in either Plant Ecology and Environment, Plant Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, or Plants and Microbes. Advanced classes are small and promote interactive learning with combinations of laboratory, field, and lecture experiences. Independent Research is a central theme in our department because directed study in the field or laboratory with a faculty member gives the student first-hand experience with the scientific process and builds skills relevant for careers in science. Please see the Plant Biology Undergraduate Program (http://www.plantbio.uga.edu/programs/undergraduate) for more information and for descriptions of courses of study designed for particular job opportunities.

Details

Career Opportunities: Careers in Plant Sciences are numerous and diverse. They include research at universities, government laboratories and at biotechnology companies; teaching at the high school, college or university level; management and interpretation as staff biologist with state and federal agencies; and administration and sales with plant and plant product-related industries. An undergraduate major in plant biology also provides a strong background for graduate-level study in plant biology and other biological sciences.
Expectations
of Transfer Students:
Recommended courses:

1. Plant Biology or general Biology sequence; course content should be very similar to sequences taught at UGA since the introductory course content is prerequisite to the upper division biological sciences courses taught at UGA. Sequences should be completed at one institution.
2. General Chemistry
3. Calculus

The courses in biology and chemistry are prerequisites to upper division biology courses. Students who transfer to UGA without these courses will be delayed in completing the requirements for the major.
