Career Opportunities: |
An undergraduate degree in art history provides the student with a broad liberal arts education; it can, therefore, be used as the basis for further study in many fields leading to a variety of professional careers. The student who wishes to pursue a career in art history should consider graduate studies on the M.A. or Ph.D. level. With such advanced degrees, professional employment opportunities include college and university teaching, museum and research positions, and the art market.

Expectations
of Transfer Students: |
Transfer students must meet all university, college, and major requirements. In some cases, they may be asked to supply syllabi from art history courses taken elsewhere to help the area determine what type of credits were earned.

Special Requirements: |
Preparation for the Major:
Students are expected to take four semesters of a foreign language, but fluency in French and/or German, as well as knowledge of the language appropriate to the field of interest, will greatly enhance not only the students' experiences as undergraduates, but also their candidacy to graduate art history programs, potential employment, and career opportunities.
Students must earn at least a C in all major required and Area VI courses.

Scholarships: |
The scholarships listed below are open to any full-time student majoring in any area of the visual arts who has completed a minimum of one year of study in the School of Art. Preference is generally given to students who will be third- or fourth-year students but, in the final analysis, all factors are taken into consideration before a decision is reached. Applications will be screened by an appointed faculty committee which will have sole discretion in determining recipients of the awards. Recipients of scholarships may be required to participate in a group exhibition in the Visual Arts Gallery.
Mary Rosenblatt Scholarships: Established primarily to assist students who are planning a career in teaching; however, they are not limited to students majoring in art education.
Betty Cabin Scholarships: To assist worthy students majoring in any program of the school.
Vince Dooley Scholarships: To assist worthy students majoring in any program of the school.

Internships: |
An internship for art history majors may be arranged at the Georgia Museum of Art through the art history area. It is offered for credit and is, therefore, not a paid position. It does not count toward the required 30 hours of art history credits. For further information, contact the director of the Georgia Museum of Art and the area chair of art history at the Lamar Dodd School of Art.

Other Learning Opportunities: |
Other study abroad programs beyond those sponsored by UGA may be of value and interest to art history majors. The area recommends that students look for qualified programs that offer courses in the native language and in the visual culture of the host country. Students may receive up to 6 hours of art history credit through an international program, but they should check with the art history area before completing registration in such a program to find out if credit is likely to be granted.

Available Graduate Programs: |
With an A.B. in art history, a student wishing to go on in the field can consider various graduate programs in art history, museum studies, or arts administration. Some programs, like the one at UGA, offer a discrete M.A. degree in art history as well as the Ph.D., while other programs award the M.A. within the progress towards the Ph.D.
