Description: The Avian Biology major provides broad training in practical, applied science and a strong grounding in general biology and chemistry. The unique characteristics of birds provide excellent opportunities for students to learn the basic principles of biology associated with reproduction, behavior, physiology, nutrition, genetics and disease as they relate to avian species. It prepares students in various areas including education, environmental protection, resource conservation, wildlife rehabilitation, and biomedical research. In addition, this program provides a broad background in the biological sciences that can be used by students to prepare for professional programs in veterinary medicine, pharmacy, medicine, and dentistry, as well as for advanced degrees (Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy) in any of the biological sciences.

Career Opportunities: Birds play an increasingly important role in human society. Domesticated birds provide food, feathers and companionship; wild birds are significant players in nearly every terrestrial ecosystem. Avian biology majors consider birds as both economically and environmentally important organisms. Bird biology, behavior, productivity and management are all subjects avian biology majors study in detail. Graduates may work with birds reared for food purposes, such as chickens, or they may work with companion birds or game birds.
Scholarships: There are several departmental scholarships available for avian biology majors. Please visit the following website for a current listing: http://www.caes.uga.edu/departments/poultry/undergraduate/scholarships.html
Internships: Internships are available.
