General Information
PURPOSE AND ORGANIZATION
The College of Family and Consumer Sciences is focused on "Knowledge for Real Life." Our graduates find
employment in educational settings, business or industry, communications,
consumer education and health-related professions. Family and Consumer Sciences graduates' "Knowledge for
Real Life" allows them to competitively pursue advanced degrees in law, medicine and research.
Upon completing core curriculum requirements, students take specialized professional courses specific to their
majors and professional goals. Applied learning experiences and internships are emphasized in all programs of
study in order to prepare students for their future work settings. Leadership and communication skills are also
emphasized through various college programs and activities as are experiences that promote knowledge of and
sensitivity to issues of multicultural diversity.
FACILITIES
Dawson Hall, Speirs Hall, and Barrow Hall located on South Campus, house the college's modern and fully equipped teaching
laboratories and classrooms as well as research and computer laboratories. Animal laboratories are located in
Boyd Graduate Studies Building.
The Child Development Lab at the Mcphaul Center houses laboratories
for instructional, clinical, and research activities, providing opportunities for observations of and work
with infants, children under six, parents, and families. In addition, early intervention programs operate as
integral parts of the McPhaul Center.
The Housing and Demographics Research Center (HDRC) provides housing research, promotes a more rational
regulatory environment for the building community and disseminates research findings to policy makers,
interested parties, and the general public.

ADVISING
New students and students transferring into the college receive initial advising in the Office of Student
Services.
DEGREES OFFERED
The College of Family and Consumer Sciences offers the
degree of Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences (B.S.F.C.S.), with majors in Child and Family
Development; Child and Family Development/Early Childhood Education: Prekindergarten-Grade 2; Consumer
Economics; Consumer Foods; Consumer Journalism; Dietetics; Family and Consumer Sciences Education; Family
Financial Planning; Fashion Merchandising; Furnishings and Interiors; Honors Interdisciplinary Studies;
Housing; and Nutrition Science. The majors are described under Programs of Study in this Bulletin. The College
also offers the Master of Science (M.S.) Degree and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in all departments. A
non-thesis option (M.F.C.S.) is available in the Foods and Nutrition Department. For further information,

COLLEGE-WIDE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
CHFD/FDNS/HACE/TXMI 2000 and either CHFD 2100 or HACE 2100 are required of all students pursuing the Bachelor of Science degree in Family and Consumer Sciences.
ACCREDITATION
The College of Family and Consumer Sciences is accredited by the American Association of Family and Consumer
Sciences. The Dietetics major is accredited by the American Dietetics Association. The Furnishings and
Interiors major is accredited by the National Kitchen and Bath Association.
