Course Title: | Personal Career Management and Service Learning |
Course Description: | Job search issues and career and life planning. Assists students in making the transition from the academic community to the work environment. At the conclusion of the class, students should be better able to make decisions relating to their future career directions and successfully execute a self-directed job search. Students will be taught skills related to effective internal and external consulting in order to facilitate the service-learning project requirement for ILA fellows. |

Nontraditional Format: | Course includes a service-learning project during the semester that either employs skills or knowledge learned in the course or teaches new skills or knowledge related to course objectives. Students will be involved in the planning and implementation of the project(s) and may spend time outside of the classroom. Students will be engaged in the service-learning component for approximately 25-50% of the overall instruction time. |

Course Objectives: | The objective of the first half of the course is to teach
career management skills. The objective of the second half is
to teach skills related to effective internal and external
consulting in order to facilitate the service-learning project
requirement for ILA Leadership Fellows. Students will work
with a non-profit in Athens or Atlanta as consultants helping
the organization in a meaningful and sustainable way and based
on the needs of the particular organization. In this class, the
students work in groups of 5-8 to develop a project plan and
goals which will be fully implemented by the end of
Organizational Leadership (taken the following semester). The
projects are designed to give students real-world experience and
practice using the leadership skills developed in Leadership and
Personal Development. Each student is expected to be an active
participant in the project. |
Topical Outline: | Topics for the first half will include resume writing, job
search correspondence, interview skills, business etiquette,
and ethics. The second half will include project overview,
problem identification, creative problem solving, qualitative
research and data gathering, benchmarking, preparing client
feedback, implementation, and project management. In addition,
two to four classes will involve speakers who are either alumni
or corporate sponsors. These speakers will discuss their
experiences with project management and consulting. |
