Course Description: | Supply chain management, just-in-time, and total quality management philosophies are discussed, and organizational goals, strategies, strategic objectives, and performance measures are described. These topics provide the systems perspective for effective supply chains. Objectives are to provide the student the concepts and tools to design, manage, and improve the cross-functional links in supply chains. |

Course Objectives: | The objective of the course is to provide steps/procedures for
managing and improving supply chains by examining the processes
on which a supply is built. Upon completion of the course, one
should have a thorough knowledge of the following concepts:
- Inherent conflicts which arise in supply chains and some
solutions for mitigating their ill effects.
- Basics of supply chain inventory: (1) What are the appropriate
measures; (2) Where should inventory be held.
- Firm's boundary in the supply chain. |
Topical Outline: | 1. The design of the transformation process including
environmental factors that dictate the process design.
2. Identifying the needs of specific links and how to design,
manage, measure and improve each link and the overall
effectiveness of the supply chain in meeting the needs of the end
customer.
3. Forecasting, demand management, and master planning concepts,
when and where to forecast.
4. Traditional improvement techniques.
5. Just-In-Time improvement techniques.
6. Theory of Constraints improvement techniques.
7. Materials management concepts for managing the materials and
capacity needs.
8. Traditional finished goods inventory management concepts.
9. Identifying the appropriate supply chain goals, strategies,
strategic objectives, and measures required to achieve high
consumer service levels. |
