Course Description: | The organization of work and occupational processes, such as the emergence of temporary and contract work, the decline of manufacturing jobs and the rise of the service sector, and the impact of technology on the structure of work and the experiences of workers. |

Course Objectives: | This course builds on material covered in the Sociology of Work and Industry
(SOCI 3750), the Sociology of Occupations (SOCI 3850), and the Sociology of
Organizations (SOCI 3950), and students are expected to have taken at least one of
these courses before enrolling in SOCI 4350.
On completion of this course, students should (1) be familiar with some of the
recent debates in the sociology of work and occupation and be familiar with the
concepts necessary for understanding these debates; (2) be able to evaluate
critically studies in this area and to assess their strengths and weaknesses; and
(3) have developed their abilities to present orally in class and to engage in
considered intellectual discussion on the topics under consideration. |
