Course Description: | Designed to help students develop the background and skills
necessary to evaluate research and practice from a grounded
theoretical perspective. The course provides a review of
contemporary theories used in financial planning and household
decision making studies. |

Course Objectives: | 1. Identify the major theories associated with financial
planning and consumer decision making.
2. Describe the elements of a theory.
3. Explain the role of theory in shaping applied research.
4. Compare and contrast theories used to frame personal
financial planning, consumer economics, and housing research.
5. Develop a literature review relevant to an important
personal finance, housing, or consumer economics issue or
problem.
6. Critique a research study in a manner that includes a
rigorous analysis of methods and procedures.
7. Identify and evaluate measurement tools and techniques that
can be used in practice and within the context of empirical
analysis.
8. Describe the logic of sampling and different sampling
techniques.
9. Become familiar with the current issues and controversies
in financial planning, housing, and consumer economics
research.
