Land Conservation Practicum


Course Description

Ecology graduate students collaborate with law students to address pressing land conservation issues for nonprofit and government agency clients. The course consists of a seminar that meets once a week and client projects where students under the supervision of the instructor research, analyze, and draft various documents and advise clients.

Non-Traditional Format

In addition to a two-hour weekly lecture, students are required to meet with the instructor and with their assigned project group for at least two additional discussion hours per week. Furthermore, up to eight additional hours outside of in-class work will be completed that will include class preparation and project work. Students will track their time for instructor review.

  • By the end of this course, students are expected to have: Developed an understanding of federal, state and local programs and law that support land conservation.
  • Acquired a thorough understanding of the requirements for the donation of a conservation easement and other relevant considerations.
  • Increased their understanding of the ecological context for this work.
  • Developed research, analysis, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Acquired broadly applicable lawyering skills needed for client counseling, project management, and collaboration with experts.
  • Reflected on the role of private land conservation and the human, institutional, and legal context of this work.
