Course Description
Influences of cultural pluralism on American education. Characteristics of culturally and linguistically diverse groups and the relationship among language, culture, and learning. Development of culturally responsive teaching strategies.

Research paper reflecting review and analysis of language culture and schooling.

Course Objectives
This course is designed to prepare educators for teaching students and working with families from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Topical Outline
Students will begin and end the course with seminars on The University of Georgia campus, and will spend 3 weeks in Xalapa, Mexico and its surrounding areas studying Spanish and learning about Mexican culture and schooling. At the end of the experience we will develop workshops for colleagues in schools, so that we can share what we have learned about working with students from different cultural backgrounds.
