Topics specifically chosen to meet the needs of the student of economics: the definite integral, functions of several variables, partial derivatives, Lagrange multipliers, and matrices.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will learn the definite integral, functions of several variables, and matrices.
  • Students will solve maximum and minimum problems using partial derivatives and the method of Lagrange multipliers.

Topical Outline

  • 1. Brief review of differentiation, antiderivatives.
  • 2. Separable differential equations, integration techniques.
  • 3. The definite integral, Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, calculation of areas, Consumer’s and Producer’s Surplus.
  • 4. Partial differentiation and applications to optimization problems, Lagrange multipliers.
  • 5. Matrix algebra and applications.
