Course Description

The theoretical and conceptual foundations of community health promotion, the health care system, multicultural issues in community health, and the contribution of community-based organizations and coalitions to the health and well-being of individuals and the communities in which they reside.

Course Objectives

As a result of participating in this course, students will be able to: 1) Analyze the history of community health promotion both within and outside the realm of public health; 2) Discuss the role of communities within the social ecological model of health promotion. 3) Describe the concepts and theories related to community organization and community mobilization. 4) Discuss the medical care system and health care resources available within communities; 5) Examine the contribution to community health of various health-related organizations (e.g., Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American Red Cross, the American Cancer Society); 6) Apply principles of multiculturalism within a community setting; 7) Describe international issues in community health promotion; 8) Identify and discuss legal and ethical issues relevant to community health promotion; and 9) Examine the role of the environment in health protection in the community.
