Course Description
Study of jazz theory with in-depth analysis of chord/scale relationships based on standard period compositions. Study of performance and compositional styles.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be responsible for transcribing landmark solos of specific artists, such as Louis Armstrong, Hank Mobley, Freddie Hubbard, and Herbie Mann.

Course Objectives
The student will be able to: * Demonstrate knowledge of jazz literature * Demonstrate improvisational techniques in a variety of styles * Perform selected literature in both solo and ensemble settings
Topical Outline
1. The 32-bar song form (begun with "I Got Rhythm"). 2. Chord/scale relationships in compositions of Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, George Gershwin, Thelonious Monk, and others. 3. Compositional styles of Clark Terry (Memories of Duke), Joe Pass (Ira, George and Joe), Duke Ellington (In a Mellow Tone), and Thelonious Monk (Round Midnight). 4. Repertoire study including "A Foggy Day," "I Love You," "I Let a Song go Out of My Heart," and "Well You Needn’t."
