Jazz Improvisation I


Course Description

The study of chords and corresponding scales and how they are used in jazz context. Students will practice the skill of creating melodies on all chord/scales qualities. Students will study a variety of song forms used in the jazz style, 12-bar major blues, 12-bar minor blues, 32-AABA song form.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to transcribe an additional recorded jazz solo as approved by instructor.

Course Objectives

Students will gain an understanding of melody/harmonic structure as well as song forms used in jazz style by playing on their respective instrument each class session.
