Jazz History


Course Description

Aural identification of factual stylistic knowledge of the major works, stylistic trends, and performance practices in twentieth-century jazz. Awareness of the major composers and geographical areas of influence in jazz from the late nineteenth century to the present. Development of a vocabulary for discussing jazz compositions, jazz performance, and improvisation. Demonstrable ability to process and write about music heard in concerts and in the class.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Research paper of major length and appropriate depth of investigation relating to the history of jazz.

Course Objectives

Students will understand the nearly 150-year history of jazz the Americas, as demonstrated by mastery of course content; written description of jazz compositions, using specifically developed vocabulary; and through discussion in class.
