Course Description
Introductory level jazz big band. Instrumentation is saxophones, trombones, trumpets, plus rhythm section, including piano, bass, drums, and guitar. This ensemble rehearses music from all eras of big band jazz from Duke Ellington through contemporary composers. Students are accepted by audition.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students are required to transcribe improvised solo
from recording or approval of instructor.

Course Objectives
The student will be able to: *Recognize stylistic differences between famous jazz musicians from each era; *Perform and rehearse at a professional level; *Demonstrate a high level of technical facility on appropriate instruments; *Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and performance practice of selected jazz band repertoire.

1. Historical Overview: The study of the evolution of big band music from: *swing era; *be-bop; *post bop; *cool era; *latin jazz; *contemporary. 2. Performance and improvisation techniques.
