Course Objectives

The course develops a method for script analysis based on the recognition that a script is essentially a plan or blueprint for the realization of a stage play. Once the method is developed in class it is applied to a series of plays, each differing in style and form. In addition to scripts examined in class, students will do individual written analyses. The scripts for plays that the class then witnesses are also included. The focus is on dramatic art as practiced on stage, but some reference is made to screen forms of the drama. Completing the course, the student should be able to examine the parts of a script with an understanding of how they contribute to the ultimate play in performance.

Topical Outline

I. Exploration of a method for script analysis. II. Application of the method to specific scripts. III. Relationship between script and play: examination of plays in performance. IV. Implications for literary and creative endeavors.
