Revolution, Revolt, and Nationlism in the Nineteenth Century


Course Description

Discussion of texts by German/Austrian writers and artists who responded to and participated in political movements of the nineteenth century. Texts address the Napoleonic Wars, democratic visions, the mid-century revolts, women's rights, Jewish emancipation, and the rise of nationalism. Taught in German.

Course Objectives

Students will gain a familiarity with the important issues facing the German-speaking world in the 19th century and read important works of literature from the era. Students will be evaluated on the basis of in-class discussions, written essay assignments, and in-class exams.
