The German Romantic Age


Course Description

What is Romanticism? How do artistic disciplines vary in their expression of Romantic ideals? Works include nineteenth-century poems, fairy tales, short fiction, letters, brief philosophical texts, music, and art. Taught in German.

Course Objectives

Students, having investigated the interstices of the Romantic movements of the various arts in Germany, will have read major texts of German Romantic literature, been introduced to philosophical texts of the era, and studied important works of art and music. Students will be evaluated on the basis of in-class discussions, written assignments, such as literary journals and letters, and in-class exams.
