The Wall


Course Description

The Berlin Wall as a site of history and imagination within the context of post-war politics, culture, and everyday life. Discussion of the physical border and the persistence of mental "walls" between East and West Germans. Prose supplemented by political documents, interviews, films, and music. Taught in German.

Course Objectives

To gain understanding of the Berlin Wall as a site of history and imagination within the context of post-war politics, culture, and everyday life. Students will be evaluated on the basis of in-class discussions and oral presentations, written assignments, such as essays and written homework, and in-class exams.
