Course Description
Examination of ways in which historical scholarship can be incorporated into social studies teaching. Evaluation of materials and methods used to teach history in secondary and middle schools.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
In addition to the seminar requirements for undergraduates, all
graduate students must complete a multimedia portfolio that
demonstrates their ability to apply cultural studies concepts
to their experiences and observations in educational contexts
in their host nation. In addition to the artifacts (photos,
videos, sound recordings, and objects), the portfolio must
include a narrative that clearly links the artifacts to the
ideas and theories developed in the seminar and a bibliography
of secondary sources. Portfolios will be evaluated for
thoroughness, rigor, and originality.

Course Objectives
Students will be able to: 1. Utilize the National Standards for teaching history. 2. Recall information about U. S., World, and local history needed to teach in social studies classrooms. 3. Utilize knowledge of history to prepare lessons for teaching history in social studies classrooms. 4. Develop course materials for teaching history in social studies classrooms that display the use of effective pedagogy. 5. Compose course materials that reflect creative use of historical knowledge. 6. Discuss major issues related to teaching history.
